A 2 day winter learn to lead climbing course in the Cairngorms, Scotland would begin with a meeting point in Aviemore at Tiso at 08:30 followers by a kit check, avalanche forecast and weather forecast discussion and an outline of the plan. Throughout the two ays you an expect to be leading routes, placing your own gear, building anchors, belaying, tying in, route finding and much much more. The course will focus on technical skills, with an emphasis on safety and we will discuss route choice in particular considering avalanche terrain and what is appropriate skill wise. Participants will learn how to use ice axes, crampons and trad equipment, and will practice setting up and managing a variety of different anchor points. You will consolidate learning and development, with a focus on developing the skills necessary for independent winter lead climbing so hopefully after the course you can do so without an instructor/guide present.
Throughout the course, participants will receive expert instruction and guidance from experienced guides, as well as ample opportunity to practice and refine their skills in a supportive environment. The length of the course is normally 2 days, but upon request or via our week long course can be extended to the needs and abilities of the participants. The course will conclude on the final day with a debrief and reflection on progress made. All courses will be tailored to the needs/wishes of the climbers.
Routes led will normally vary between grade 1-2 and may include things like Central Gully, Fiacaill Coulouir, the Slant, Central Left Hand or Jacobs Ladder. On route you will learn how to place and remove gear, build anchors, belay, tie in, read the route, avalanche awareness and understand what is within your own abilities to lead at the moment.
