Winter Outdoor Adventures in the Highlands for all
A single day guided ice climbing course (usually on Cairngorm) – we will go and find the best ice suited for your abilities. The majority of Scottish winter climbing is snow, rock, ice but some routes hold a bit more ice like central left hand, Aladdin’s Mirror Direct and red Gully. We will aim for one of these routes for the course. Rest assured even if there is minimal ice due to melt cycles we will still be able to go winter climbing!

Guided Ice Climbing Course Information
Guided Ice Climbing Course
A guided ice climbing course on Cairngorm is an opportunity for climbers to learn and develop the essential techniques and skills needed to safely and effectively navigate and climb frozen terrain in Scotland. Led by experienced winter mountaineering and climbing instructors, (members of AMI) you will learn how to use ice axes and crampons and develop a range of ice climbing techniques, from basic movement to more advanced technical skills depending on the route chosen and any prior ability.
The routes on Cairngorm offer a range of challenges, providing opportunities for climbers of all skill levels to test themselves and improve their abilities. In addition to the thrill of ice climbing, climbers will also experience the stunning views and unique atmosphere of the Scottish Highlands. Safety is always a priority, and guides will provide all necessary equipment and instruction to ensure a safe and rewarding experience and we will tailor the day to your abilities, the weather and the avalanche risk/weather forecasts. And if there is minimal ice we will still be able to winter climb!
Any Winter Climbing courses will only be delivered by individuals holding the highest UK climbing award you can attain the WMCI and all instructors will be members of AMI (association of mountaineering instructors) – proving they adhere to strict CPD requirements and are currently at the very top of the climbing industry.
Prior winter walking experience is recommended but not essential and some basic prior climbing experience would also be ideal.
Guided Ice Climbing Course Itinerary
A 1-day guided ice climbing course on Cairngorm, Scotland usually starts with a meeting at Tiso in Aviemore at 08:30. After introductions and a gear check, we will make our way to our chosen route with your guide leading the way into the corrie. The day will be spent being guided up an ice climb which may have sections of mixed climbing as well – on route, you will develop and refining essential ice climbing techniques, including the use of ice axes and crampons, and learning how to navigate and climb frozen terrain safely and effectively. You will be guided up the route and won’t be in a lead position on the day.
The guide/instructor will provide instruction and guidance throughout the day, with the goal of improving each climber’s ability and confidence on the ice. The course typically finishes back at the car around 16:00. And hopefully the weather will be favourable leaving plenty of time to take in the stunning views from the top of the Northern Corries of Cairngorm.
