Winter Skills 2 Day Course Information
The best location for a winter skills course in Scotland, is without a doubt the Cairngorms near Aviemore. Our course is a comprehensive and hands-on program that covers all the essential skills needed for winter mountaineering. Participants will learn about the winter environment, including snowpack and avalanche awareness, before progressing to practical skills such as navigation, ice axe and crampon use and emergency procedures.
Over the two days, participants will have the opportunity to practice these skills in a variety of terrain and conditions, under the expert guidance of highly experienced and qualified instructors (members of AMI). The course will be challenging, but participants will leave with a solid foundation of skills that will allow them to explore the mountains in winter with confidence and safety.
This 2-day winter skills course in Scotland, based in the Cairngorms, is an intensive and hands-on program that covers all the essential skills needed for walking in the mountains in winter.
Day 1: We will meet in Aviemore outside Tiso in the morning of day one. Then we will head up to the mountain after an introduction and making sure everyone has everything they need (check the what do I need to bring part of this page). On day one, participants will learn about the winter environment, including snowpack and avalanche awareness/route planning. They will then progress to practical skills, such as an introduction to navigation, ice axe and crampon use. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice their skills in a variety of terrain and conditions. Normally we aim to use one of the Northern Coires or head up onto the summit off Cairngorm itself.
Day 2: Participants will build on their skills from the previous day, practicing navigation and technical skills in more challenging terrain relevant for the winter mountains as well as covering emergency procedures. This will likely include a journey either into one of the Coires or up onto the Plateau or both.
The course will be led by highly experienced and qualified instructors (members of AMI) who are intimately familiar with the area and its unique challenges.
